#Indonesia is expected to further collaborate with #Hungary to continue to receive their water treatment expertise #Water #Renewable #ESG #Sustainability #Data #AI #SouthEastAsia

As part of Hungary’s earlier efforts to help their small and medium enterprises that are specialising in waterworks, the Budapest Waterworks submitted and won a tender from Indonesia to provide water for 35 Indonesian communities. This was part of the Hungary government’s plan to provide opportunities for the Hungarian companies to be involved in international projects. Moving forward to 2021, Hungary will once again extend its water treatment expertise to Indonesia.

Hungary is a landlocked country located in the central Danube Basin. It is divided into The Great Plains, the Transdanube and the Northern Hills areas. Hungary is a fairly small country but is known for great biodiversity. This biodiversity is threatened by some of Hungary’s most serious problems: air and water pollution. Pollution disrupts the water quality in Hungary, especially the Danube River, quite significantly. These pollutants come from industrial and large-scale agriculture.

Still, the country is relentless in solving the issue of drinking water scarcity. Even though they acknowledged that agriculture is one of the major source of pollution of both surface and groundwater, an emerging threat to the water supply comes from drug residues. Aside from this, the country also learnt that conventional wastewater treatments are not effective at removing these pollution.

Supported by its private sector, the country has developed methods aimed at removing pollutants from agricultural sources from their drinking water. Turned out that their experience in this type of water treatment has served them well in international business development.

While discussing potential water treatment projects with Indonesia, the country has also been very aggressive in expanding their reach elsewhere and had managed to clinch a water treatment deal with Ghana as well.

Apart from having specialised experiences in water treatment, Hungary is already familiar with Indonesia’s working culture. This places them in good stead to secure more projects in Indonesia in the future.

In addition, the Hungarian government reportedly will be offering project financing and other banking facilities, which might be provided by the Hungarian Exim Bank and the Hungarian Commercial Bank. The provision of expertise, manpower, financing and local working experience will certainly put the Hungarians in a good light, making the deal difficult to reject.

From my perspective, these types of infrastructure projects could potentially open up a lot of opportunities in other sectors as well and we could expect the Indonesia-Hungary collaboration to strengthen further in the future, if everything goes right.

Previously, the Hungarians have already spearheaded their market entry into the Indonesia with a total of 36 water treatment plants on Sumatra, Java, Celebes and Flores islands. We could expect the Hungarian government, as part of their next contract agreement negotiation, to try to negotiate for more Hungarians to be involved in the upcoming water treatment projects in Indonesia. That being so, I think that it would be critical to include a strong ESG mandate within the future commercial vehicle so that it fosters a collaborative and inclusive working culture for all parties.

In my opinion, this move would provide more access and opportunities for Hungarians to understand and learn more about the Indonesians’ working culture which might pan out well in the future.

Why?

Based on my past observations of large civil engineering projects, there were some foreigners provided their engineering expertise in Southeast Asia and ended up marrying some of the locals. Now, some of them even abandoned their engineering work and set up businesses that involve some linkage between their country of origin and Southeast Asia. Their businesses AND children now serves as important connections between their country of origins and Southeast Asia.

This is why we should sometimes open up our perspectives and explore the possibilities. Don’t merely judge a situation simply based on near, short, mid-term mindset but learn to create bridges, create possibilities, create collaborations, create multiple positive futures. Always be creating links. Always be creating.

That’s the key to growth in Indonesia, or maybe anywhere else in the world too.
