#SoutheastAsia countries could learn from the upcoming collaboration between #Israel and #Google on how they would harness artificial intelligence to solve some of the most pressing issues in #ESG and #Sustainability #AI #ML #Data #Asean

Several countries around the world are experiencing aging populations. In addition, some might even have manpower shortages in important sectors due to shifts in the economy. As such, many are turning to artificial intelligence to solve certain long term issues stemming from these challenges.

Various learning algorithms, together with the enormous increase in computational power, are already beginning to support many aspects of our lives. I think that different disciplines must come together in order to achieve new technological breakthroughs.

Understanding them requires proficiency not only in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines, such as computer science, mathematics and engineering, but also in the ethics, business and even philosophical thinking.

Implementation without first securing buy-ins from the public is like committing suicide. That’s why, recently many AI researchers have started to encourage each other to try to reframe how they should deliver their messages.

If you noted, the messaging has changed to how AI could augment/ support human workers as opposed to how AI has the potential to do a lot of different types of work at much faster rate. The former message implies that humans would still be employed but the latter sort of implies that humans will be replaced by technology.

Even using the term “Support” instead of “Augment” would be much better to getting buy-ins from the segment of the public who aren’t well-versed with technical terms. Otherwise you’ll risk being pretentious, being elite or worse being an Android that’s secretly conspiring to take over the world. Hmmm.

You see, the devil is in the details.

Even the approach.

A genuine way to promote how Artificial Intelligence could support mankind is to demonstrate its real capabilities in solving some of the most pressing challenges within the ESG and sustainability complexes. Proven experiences in these areas will surface strong evidences which could then be used as case studies, as living proof to the advocates’ intent and Artificial Intelligence’s applied capabilities.

Israel is doing a lot of good work in this area. Very soon, they will announce a collaboration with Google to  use Artificial Intelligence to solve humanitarian and environmental challenges.

This initiative will support R&D and engineering to tackle problems within public health, nature & society, climate & energy, accessibility and crisis response. Already, Tel Aviv University has announced the new Multidisciplinary Center for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science (DS) to advance this initiative.

Southeast Asia has its own set of pressing issues. Be it in ESG, sustainability or others, there’s a lot of insights that could be harnessed for even greater purpose if we could collectively put forth our minds to solving it. Plus, nothing beats the experience of personally encountering issues and solving it. Its a chance, a opportunity, a window to grow and practise adaptability.
