#Thailand issues urgent advisory on the upcoming rainy season, urges the public to monitor the news during cyclones season and initiates policy to mitigate possible floods #SoutheastAsia #Asean #ESG #Sustainability #Environment #Cyclone #Taute #hanjun

Many weather stations around South Asia and Southeast Asia have been issuing advisories for the upcoming rainy season and some governments have begun to prepare for any possible floods and cyclones. The recent emergence of Cyclone Taute caused major destruction to many parts of South India and it is predicted that the cyclone will reach Gujarati by tonight. The cyclone hit the shores of Kerala yesterday and devastated many infrastructures and buildings. By tonight, it would have travelled all the way to Gujarat!

By any standards, it is quite a distance from Kerala to Gujarat, almost equivalent to the distance between Jakarta to Medan!

From the news report, there’s likely to be destruction of houses, uprooting of power and communication poles, major damage to roads, flooding of escape routes, blowing down of bushy trees and others. Some prediction models have indicated that Cyclone Taute might cross over to South Pakistan.

Sea surface temperatures in Arabian Sea have increased rapidly during the past century and this has led to an increase in the frequency and intensity of cyclones in the Arabian Sea.

Based on studies, normally one or two cyclones form over the North India Ocean during the pre-monsoon season in April and May. This time no cyclone formed in April but a depression had formed over the south Andaman Sea last month. The Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal are breeding grounds of cyclones.

The period from October to December, accounts for 66% of occurrences of cyclones, followed by 27% in the months of April and May.

The Thai Meteorological Department has mark the official start of the 2021 rainy season, with 5 to 10% more rainfall expected compared to last year. The Meteorological Department said that the first half of the rainy season, from now until July, the total amount of rain is expected to be 10% more than the average. They have warned the public and mariners to monitor the news during cyclone periods.

In addition, the government has also issued an urgent policy to encourage all related-agencies to work together to mitigate the possible risks arising from possible water issues. Apart from preparing deeper waterways and soliciting for aids in advance, the government is also encouraging all related agencies to help to raise the public awareness on this issue.
