Ever since the start of the pandemic, Indonesia, like many other economies, had its share of setbacks and realised the importance of shoring up their digital, blue and green economy. Companies now find that it is essential to be able to continue their operations with digital platforms and some are leveraging video conferencing platforms to do businesses with their overseas counterparts. At the same time, the global shift towards the blue and green economy has also played an important role in nudging the country towards sustainable development as well.
The government is relooking at the regulations that are covering the marine economy, hoping to encourage their fishery companies towards sustainable fishing methods while trying not to disturb the fishermen’s livelihoods. Apart from this, they are also rethinking their energy consumption goals and how they are managing their forests.
Logging and the burning of forests to clear land for cultivation has made Indonesia the world’s third largest emitter of greenhouse gases, just behind China and the United States. Forests are often burned by farmers and plantation owners. Another major source of deforestation is the logging industry, driven by demand from other countries. Agricultural development and transmigration programmes has also moved large populations into rainforest areas, further increasing deforestation rates.
The country envisions itself to become self-sufficient in the field of space and aeronautical technology and these technology could help to support the growth of the blue and green economy.
The government will explore a public-private collaboration to improve its aerospace research eco-system and focus on end-products like N-219 aircrafts, satellites, space observation and monitoring services The collaboration would also try to reach out to the global space and aeronautical communities to be involved in fostering the local eco-system.
Indonesia is not new to the Asia space race. It has launched a successful satellite from India in 2007. Its program, the National Institute for Aeronautics and Space, has sought to use Indonesia’s 17,000-plus islands as a bargaining chip in negotiations, and previously tried to partner Russia to provide Biak Island as a launch site for Roscosmos.
Also last year, an American company was offered use of part of the small island of Biak in Papua by Indonesia in December 2020. But it was reported that environmental experts feared a launch site might further damage the island’s delicate ecosystem.
One of its Southeast Asian neighbours, Malaysia also has a space agency, Angkasa, which partnered Russia to train a Malaysian for travel to the International Space Station. That goal was achieved in 2007 when Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor reached outer orbit. Malaysia’s biggest independent success to date: putting a microsatellite carried by a Russian Dnepr rocket into orbit in 2008.
To focus their efforts on building the space and aeronautical technology, the country will merge its existing space and aeronautical program, the National Institute for Aeronautics and Space into the National Research and Innovation Agency. Three other agencies will also merge into the National Research and Innovation Agency, namely the National Nuclear Energy Agency, the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences.
