According to estimates, the forest cover in Thailand declined from 61% to 34% between 1945 and 1975. The Thailand Royal Forest Department established that the forest cover stood at 31.6% in 2019, which is roughly about 16 hectares (almost equivalent to 22 million soccer fields).

The deforestation was mainly attributed to the clearance of forest for cropland. Much of the country’s economic growth was derived from the increased agricultural production for export.

Thailand’s agricultural sector is responsible for creating employments for about 30% of the country’s total labour force. However, the government do recognised that climate change will pose substantial challenge to the agricultural industry.

The changing climate is also adding to resource problems such as water scarcity, pollution, and soil degradation. Additional challenges include the country’s aging population and younger generation’s preference for work in other sectors.

Plus, it is also anticipated that flood and droughts will increase in intensity due to the changing climate therefore the country has embarked on a public programme with related agencies, to improve the public’s awareness of this issue.

To mitigate the potential risks arising from the upcoming challenges. the government has put forth a concoction of policy measures comprising tree planting drive, forest monitoring, forest fire prevention amongst others.

Thailand has committed to planting 64,000 hectres of trees (roughly about the size of 90,000 soccer fields) before the end of 2021. The country will push for related agencies to work with the private sector and local authorities to plant the trees, starting from the National Tree Day. The National Tree Day falls on 26 May 2021.

Apart from this, Thailand and Sweden also conducted a workshop together, to learn and exchange best practices in sustainable forestry management, with each other. The Swedish model of forestry is based on three pillars: ecological, economical and social sustainability.

According to various estimates, Sweden’s forest cover stands at around 50% to 70%. Forestry is a strategic sector for Sweden, with around 50% of forests owned by private individuals or families. The country accounts for about 5% of global production of wood products, pulp and paper, and is one of the world’s largest exporters of these products.

Thailand and Sweden organised the workshop as part of their gesture to reaffirm their 150 years of diplomatic relationship.
