Parrots Reveal Lack of Sustainability in Agriculture

By Katlynn Steffes, steffeska@uwplatt.edu

Agriculture is one of the most invasive ecosystem practices in the world. Planting season is approaching in the United States, and farmers might start to open up new croplands to make more money after the rough year they’ve been having. Current U.S. milk prices, on the farmer’s end, are at a current level of $17.10 per Hundred Weight, down from 17.50 last month and down from 18.90 one year ago. This is a decline in value by 2.29% from last month and a drop of 9.52% from one year ago. This caused a significant drop in profit during the quarantine and the following months. A recent study was completed in 2020 by a group of researchers from ORCiD to investigate sustainability in agriculture. ORCiD is a non-profit organization that participates in “research, scholarship and innovation across the world.”

ORCiD conducted a model study where they used parrots because of their wide distribution across the globe with 398 different species live in various habitats. Over a few years, they observed through many different methods and consulting with the International Union for Conservation of Nature, to get species conservation statuses before starting their research to get a baseline of the species’ current statuses. The researchers found that the more cropland farmers are opening up, the more wildlife has to rely on that land to survive. ORCiD found that croplands cover approximately 25% of the original parrot habitats and 40% of the global cropland extent is located within the distribution range of all parrot species together.

ORCiD also found that “the higher the number of habitats originally used by a species the higher the likelihood of this species to forage on agricultural lands.” ORCiD’s finding from their model study with the parrots has led them to conclude that the more land they take from the environment and the wildlife that lives there, the more they will use the crops in the fields. ORCiD researchers believe that the parrot model study reflects and relates to other wildlife species which are likely to forage more on agricultural lands, like the parrots.

According to the Bayer Global Group, “Despite short-term market shocks from COVID-19, the ag input market is expected to grow on average 3% annually over the next decade.”

The growing expansion of the agriculture industry will eventually lead to a high chance that there will be more interactions with farmers and wildlife. Securing a sufficient supply of quality food is just one side of the coin—the ORCiD study suggests that agriculture needs to meet these growing demands by using natural resources more efficiently and responsibly. This is a growing concern for many people globally.
Still, Andrew Cartmill, a professor at UW-Platteville from the Soil and Crop Science Department said, “I do not currently see any problems between agriculture and ecosystem services.”

Cartmill referred to the Food and Agriculture Organization and some of the concepts they have about wildlife conservation. The conclusions of the ORCiD research stated, “wild species have increasingly been reliant on human-made food resources…. As we suggest, further local-scale research is needed to fully assess the extent of parrot–agriculture conflicts.” ORCiD researchers saw that the more the parrots ate at the crops, the more aggressive the farmers got with them and killed the parrots, even going as far as persecuting them in the area. There is a need to increase the available cropland to support the growing population, but farmers also need to consider the world they are leaving behind.

This will all have a significant impact on the state of Wisconsin as farmers are approaching planting season. There are many things that a farmer needs to consider when looking to opening up new croplands. Eric Weber, an Agronomist at Country Visions Cooperative in Malone, WI, says, “that the most important thing to consider is whether or not the land will be worth using.”

Both Weber and Cartmill agree that maybe instead of investing in new land, farmers should improve their land. They gave examples of tiling the fields or fertilizing instead of clear-cutting a forest for land that won’t give the farmer profit for a couple of years. The agriculture community needs to be concerned with providing for the growing communities of the world and what they will leave behind for future generations.

#Thailand organises forestry conference to increase public’s awareness of forestry protection and sustainable urban development #SoutheastAsia #Asean #ESG #Sustainability

An estimate by the World Wildlife Fund concluded that between 1973 and 2009, Thailand’s forests declined by 43%. The Sueb Nakhasathien Foundation reported that 53% of Thailand was covered by forest in 1961. The latest studies by the Thailand Royal Forest Department, showed that only 31.6% of Thailand was covered by forest in 2019.

Forest cover in Thailand has been greatly reduced as people converted forested land to agriculture and other reasons that I am not too sure of. As of 2016, Thailand has an average annual deforestation rate of 0.72% and if this continues, the forests could really disappear in a few decades.

In response to the drastic environmental degradation, the Thailand government stepped up with the Twelfth National Economic and Social Development Plan (2017-2021) and warned that the the deteriorating levels of the country’s natural resources and environmental quality could become a weakness in sustaining their quality of life and threaten their industrial productions and services too.

Large volume of natural resources were utilised for the country’s developments and urbanisation, and this has resulted in infertile soil and reduced biodiversity. It was highlighted that unfair allocation of access and exploitation of natural resources could affect their living conditions and add economic costs.

The Thai government has been working diligently to increase awareness of forestry work and preservation to the Thais and already has in place forest policies to increase the green spaces in the country, but it takes two hands to clap and they will require a lot of support from the forestry academics and professionals.

In line with the government’s attempt to bridge the gaps within the forestry sector and enhance collaboration across related professional groups, the Thailand government has organised and opened the 2021 Forestry Conference – Thai Forestry For The People, aimed at raising the public’s awareness on the academic principles of forestry studies and to encourage them to always develop forest-related knowledge to maintain their edge.

The focus will be on forest economics, sustainable urban development, improving knowledge transfer among the timber community, raising professional standards among the forestry professionals and biodiversity of the Thailand forests.

Via Business Travel News

By Chris Davis, Contact Reporter

Much of the drive toward sustainable business travel strategies in recent years has been driven by large companies, those with tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars in annual global air spending. Many of these firms report the tens of thousands of metric tons of Scope 3 carbon emissions generated by their business travel, and some even have appointed executives dedicated to greening the travel program. Some deploy systems to closely monitor the use of travel alternatives and the environmental impact of doing so, and some are developing innovative partnerships with suppliers to further reduce emissions.

But all of that costs money, potentially quite a bit. It’s often good business for large public companies with tens of thousands of employees to ensure their commitment to sustainability is visible internally and to the public, and so the investment in developing green travel systems and strategy can pay off not only in public image but also employee satisfaction and retention. Still, it’s arguably a bit of a luxury, and one that small companies might not be so quick to embrace. Even before the pandemic, measures like buying carbon offsets or investing in the kind of remote conferencing systems that could provide an alternative to business travel might not be high on the list of spending priorities for companies with only a few million dollars in air spending.

But that doesn’t mean they’re all ignoring or evading the issue, and in fact many small companies are beginning to acknowledge the carbon impact of their business travel and are taking steps to ameliorate it. One such company is Symetra, a Bellevue, Wash.-based provider of life insurance, retirement plans and other related products to U.S.-based companies and which has a small, strictly domestic travel program.

Driven in part by its Japan-based parent company, Sumitomo Life Insurance Co., which acquired Symetra in 2016, the firm is embracing sustainable initiatives in all aspects of operations, including travel, said Symetra senior global travel and merchandise manager Karen Beauchamp.

“Our company in the past couple of years, we’ve been going through several big initiatives, and sustainability is a big one. It’s on everybody’s tongue,” Beauchamp said.

More than Talk

The initiative at Symetra has manifested in several areas of the company, she said. More than half of Symetra’s employees employ an alternate commute to get to work—pre-Covid, naturally—be it mass transit or carpooling, and the office has instituted an extensive recycling and composting program, as well as a paper-avoidance strategy.

For business travel, though, the company has embraced a virtual-meetings strategy, pandemic notwithstanding. Symetra’s meeting planning team is in-house and business travel policy compliance is high, and the company enthusiastically pushes remote conferencing as an alternative to travel as part of its sustainability initiative, she said.

“We actively promote it, and we will have people come after you to ask, ‘Why didn’t you do this virtually?” Beauchamp said. “One of the things that we had done—and it just finished two months before Covid went gangbusters—is that we had moved to a work-from-home opportunity plan. Maybe it’s full-time or a day or two a week, but pushing virtual meetings, that is key to success. People are staying at home. We do everything on Teams now. Everyone has laptops with cameras now. It’s a huge part of this.”

Still, there are pressures. Beauchamp noted that in-person interaction is important in insurance sales, and some Symetra salespeople are eager to receive a Covid-19 vaccine so they can resume business travel. “When you’re talking sales, nothing sells better than face to face,” she said. “I fully expect that by the end of the year, many of those guys will be in [airplane] seats.”

As such, limiting travel for live meeting attendance should remain the most effective sustainability strategy for the time being. Senior divisional leadership must approve such travel, Beauchamp said, and divisions are expected to remain within annual travel budgets. The company is experimenting with hybrid options to limit attendance and travel once live meetings return to the scene.

Next up for Symetra could be the purchase of carbon offsets for travel. “We don’t buy a lot of credits for offsetting yet,” Beauchamp said. “But I feel that’s coming within the next year.”

#Thailand has started the deployment of disinfection robots to rein in the spread of #Covid19 #SoutheastAsia #Asean #ESG #Sustainability #AI #ML #Robotics

At the moment, Thailand is reworking its vaccine strategy to contain its worst wave of Covid-19 infections as the pandemic intensifies the country’s economic crisis and complicates plans for reopening their tourism sector.

As outbreaks from nightlife venues in Bangkok overwhelms hospitals and healthcare facilities, the Thailand government is compelled to set up field hospitals and convert hotels into treatment facilities amid calls for accelerated vaccinations. It is expected to be testing on the country’s healthcare system as the workload grinds the healthcare professionals and other supporting healthcare staff such as the business administrators and cleaning professionals.

Apart from the healthcare professionals, ongoing maintenance of operations and disinfection of medical facilities are also important for hospitals and medical facilities, to be able to continually provide the critical medical support. If the weakest links within the healthcare system break down, hospitals could in turn become infection hotspots.

Earlier this month, Thailand announced that they have developed a robot to kill viruses with Ultraviolet (UV) light and might deploy these robots to combat Covid-19. Tests have shown that this invention is highly effective in removing fungi and might perform well against bacteria and viruses.

However, it was noted that occupants must vacate the enclosed space before the cleansing operation begins and this is to ensure that the occupants are not harmed by the UV light.

These disinfection robots are now deployed to some of the country’s facilities. It will be interesting to see how the cleaning professionals adapt to the robotic support to their traditional operations and observe if there’s any new changes to managing cleaning schedules and rotation of live hospital facilities.

The deployment of the disinfection robots are timely, as it helps to reduce the cleaning professionals’ exposure to possible infections, lessen reliance on manpower and diverting them to possibly other more urgent tasks. These robots are deployed to hospitals, medical facilities and agencies as tests have shown that they could rid the pathogens on the surface of medical equipment and instruments thereby reducing the use of antiseptics.

Facebook steps up to support the #Indonesia’s small and medium enterprises in digital marketing and selling to overseas markets, and once again tries to push for the #TumbuhdiFacebook campaign

Last year, Facebook announced that they would identify a number of Indonesian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and grant them monetary support of up to Rp 12.5 billion.

Apart from providing business grants to the affected SMEs, Facebook also started to provide virtual training programmes to some Indonesian businesses, helping them to adapt to the changing business landscape. The social media company also tried to kickstart a hashtag campaign among the Indonesian SMEs with the hashtag #TumbuhdiFacebook which literally means Grow (Tumbuh) in/ on (Di) Facebook.

Fast forward to now, Facebook once again tried to kickstart the #TumbuhdiFacebook campaign one more time and this time round, the company also tried to add additional hashtags – #AmanBelanjarOnline, which means spend your money safely online or safe online transactions. This hashtag campaign is in line with the Indonesian government’s attempt to create a safe digital space for online transactions as the digital economy starts to scale up.

Another hashtag program is #SheMeansBusiness, which aimed to empower the women entrepreneurs through trainings and talks that cover business management and digitisation.

Facebook would be ramping up their collaborative business activities with the Indonesian government, to the end of 2021. These activities would include a series of trainings and talks, mainly to assist the local SMEs to penetrate overseas markets.

In addition, the social media company has also offered to step up to enable consumers to report directly to the relevant Indonesian administrations for matters relating fraud, abuse of trade regulations or illegal selling. Facebook is also going to provide assistance to identified political office holders, to create virtual fire-chat sessions as well.
