#SoutheastAsia countries could learn from the upcoming collaboration between #Israel and #Google on how they would harness artificial intelligence to solve some of the most pressing issues in #ESG and #Sustainability #AI #ML #Data #Asean

Several countries around the world are experiencing aging populations. In addition, some might even have manpower shortages in important sectors due to shifts in the economy. As such, many are turning to artificial intelligence to solve certain long term issues stemming from these challenges.

Various learning algorithms, together with the enormous increase in computational power, are already beginning to support many aspects of our lives. I think that different disciplines must come together in order to achieve new technological breakthroughs.

Understanding them requires proficiency not only in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines, such as computer science, mathematics and engineering, but also in the ethics, business and even philosophical thinking.

Implementation without first securing buy-ins from the public is like committing suicide. That’s why, recently many AI researchers have started to encourage each other to try to reframe how they should deliver their messages.

If you noted, the messaging has changed to how AI could augment/ support human workers as opposed to how AI has the potential to do a lot of different types of work at much faster rate. The former message implies that humans would still be employed but the latter sort of implies that humans will be replaced by technology.

Even using the term “Support” instead of “Augment” would be much better to getting buy-ins from the segment of the public who aren’t well-versed with technical terms. Otherwise you’ll risk being pretentious, being elite or worse being an Android that’s secretly conspiring to take over the world. Hmmm.

You see, the devil is in the details.

Even the approach.

A genuine way to promote how Artificial Intelligence could support mankind is to demonstrate its real capabilities in solving some of the most pressing challenges within the ESG and sustainability complexes. Proven experiences in these areas will surface strong evidences which could then be used as case studies, as living proof to the advocates’ intent and Artificial Intelligence’s applied capabilities.

Israel is doing a lot of good work in this area. Very soon, they will announce a collaboration with Google to  use Artificial Intelligence to solve humanitarian and environmental challenges.

This initiative will support R&D and engineering to tackle problems within public health, nature & society, climate & energy, accessibility and crisis response. Already, Tel Aviv University has announced the new Multidisciplinary Center for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science (DS) to advance this initiative.

Southeast Asia has its own set of pressing issues. Be it in ESG, sustainability or others, there’s a lot of insights that could be harnessed for even greater purpose if we could collectively put forth our minds to solving it. Plus, nothing beats the experience of personally encountering issues and solving it. Its a chance, a opportunity, a window to grow and practise adaptability.

Guarding your internet privacy and also on Southeast Asia’s lack of chatting app options #SoutheastAsia #Asean #DataPrivacy #Data #AI #ML

Sometimes, we have to take a step back from all the negative news about how social media platforms are using our internet behaviours and data for their benefits. Technology now enables some tech companies to predict exactly what you would be doing at a particular time of a certain day. They know what are your likes and dislikes. They know who are the people that you interact with the most. They do know a lot about you. Sometimes, more than you do.

By right, these technology should be able to augment and complement your lives with quicker decision-making thus increasing your productivity and maybe even to the extent of improving your relationships with others. But the thing is, some people are really mad at how these tech companies are leveraging the public’s internet activities and behaviours to provide such services.

Really mad.

To the point that some even claimed that they want to take some of these tech companies down. But remember, we are not entirely at the mercy of these tech companies, especially it comes to your data privacy.

First of all, you must understand that you are the one who allowed these Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to tap on your internet activities, paving the way for them to learn almost everything about you.

As a consumer, you have the choice to either stop this feedback loop or allow it to continue. These ML algorithms can only start to work wonders if you feed them with your data. Once you stopped feeding them, the algorithms could not work as well as it should be.

In fact, a study by Northwestern University showed that the public could influence companies they think are misusing their data and all they have to do is to simply change their online behavior, such as discontinuing use of such software.

If people stop using a certain artificial intelligence-powered application, the app will lose the data needed for it to learn properly. Otherwise, you could also try to switch to using another web browser, using a Virtual Private Network, changing your office suite, etc.

Its all up to you.

Consumers also can collaboratively disrupt an Machine Learning (ML) system through atypical behavior, a practice known as data poisoning, and undermine the software’s performance. One example would be how a large number of people suddenly switched to using Signal. As more people depart from using Whatsapp, a lot of the data would be diverted to other platforms and this could starve Whatsapp.

Remember. If you are unhappy about these tech companies, don’t just lash out at them. You have a choice. The choice lies with you. The power lies in your hand, at the moment.

Sometimes I do feel that some tech companies wield too much influence and it could pose some risks to those in Southeast Asia. At the moment, I don’t think there’s any strong companies in Southeast Asia that provide a popular chatting platform like Whatsapp, Line, Kakao, WeChat or Signal. A quick search revealed the following chatting platforms in Southeast Asia.

PlatformsCountryNumber of users
Chikka (Chat)Philippines500,000 + users (I think it has ceased operations)
Zalo (Chat)Vietnam100 million downloads

Viber is not made in Southeast Asia. It is made in Israel. I wonder why so many people thinks that Viber is made in Philippines.

Imagine if Facebook decides to pull off a stunt to cut off its Whatsapp services to Brunei. The Bruneians could switch to another chatting platform but it might be a little troublesome for a short while. A short while could be eternity to some industries. A lot of things could be performed in a short while, especially in AI-powered times like now. It could be better if the region had more local-made chatting app options to mitigate the risk of being temporarily cut off when/if it ever happens.

What are your thoughts on this? Should Southeast Asia work together to develop our own chatting app platforms? Is there a market for it? Or maybe there’s some popular chatting app that has already been made in Southeast Asia (apart from Zalo) that I am totally unaware of?

#Thailand will push to set up institutes of training for unmanned aerial vehicles as part of their digital drive #Southeast Asia #Asean #ESG #Sustainability #AI #ML #Data #UAV

Thailand would promote and support the development of digital innovation and related technology in order to propel their economy towards digital transformation. This digital journey is expected to create new jobs for its current and upcoming workforce. Seems like a good idea that new jobs will be created but the transformation could cause an imbalance within the job market, siphoning workforce away from the agriculture sector to the digital sector. If that happens, can Thailand 4.0 still remains as one of the major exporters in the rice market?

Its rice exports in 2014 amounted to 1.3 percent of their GDP. Agricultural production as a whole accounts for an estimated 9% to 10.5% of their GDP. Other agricultural commodities produced in significant amounts include fish and fishery products, tapioca, rubber, grain, and sugar. Exports of industrially processed foods such as canned tuna, pineapples, and frozen shrimp are on the rise. I am not exaggerating when I say that this is a very important industry for Thailand.

As of now, almost 40% of the population work in agriculture-related jobs but this figure is expected to decrease as the country races towards the digital future. Its natural for this figure to decrease.

Why?

Ok, Thailand has already started to equip the Thais with relevant digital skills, together with substantial investments in the digital sector. Both supply and demand pairs up to compel a natural gravitation towards finding work in the digital sector of the economy for work. Apart from this, the younger Thais also get to wear nicer clothes and work in more comfortable settings. Doesn’t sound like an important consideration when choosing a career but this seems to be the case for the younger generation.

Especially for the younger generation.

Photo by Tim Mossholder on Pexels.com

To make things worse, majority of the younger Thais view the agriculture business as a past relic that is badly in need of modernisation. Apart from this, the country is also experiencing an aging generation and estimates from World Bank has it that by 2040, 42% of Thais will be over 65 years old. So we have the younger Thais abandoning labour-intensive trades for digital work then we also have an aging population that aren’t suitable for manual work too.

At this point, you would think that it is common sense for the agriculture industry to become less labour-intensive and more industrialised. The fact is, many farms are using machinery and it is estimated that almost 90% of the small farms are already harnessing technology.

How can they further improve productivity in the agribusiness?

The way forward is to use UAV, and I believe, to be supported by artificial intelligence and data analytics in the future. UAVs could be expected to perform many functions such as seeding, picking of produces, pest control and many more.

Many of these tasks are back-breaking. Will UAV be able to pick up the slack?

Photo by Pok Rie on Pexels.com

Previously, I thought that UAVs wouldn’t be able to perform these tasks but I have second thoughts after viewing the latest drones from USA. I think the UAV technology is ready for the agriculture business. The new drones are specially fortified and weighted down in order to withstand the strong winds; this is to ensure that the drone’s flight path remains steady and true to its path.

The latest battery technology also allows the drone to cover large tracts of land, which is simply amazing to me, because more charge usually means heavier battery and that translate to issues pertaining to thrust-weight ratios.

Thrust-weight ratio is indicative of the UAV’s performance and it is critical to achieve a fine balance between thrust and weight, in order for the drone to complete its objectives. A heavier drone will definitely consume more battery. Packing a bigger battery usually also means the drone becomes heavier. Its a chicken and egg issue but the latest UAV technology seems to be able to circumvent this issue and achieve good thrust-weight ratio. Once these UAVs completes its objective, it would navigate back to the charging point to recharge its battery and offload its data (in the future, offload the fruits?).

Also, I think that it is definitely possible to wire up the charging stations to harness renewable energy like solar and wind. Double wins.

The potential for utilising drones in the agriculture business is immerse and the private sector have so much to offer. First, they could step in to build the infrastructures necessary for drone training. Second, they could design yearly certification programmes. Third, sales partners could collaborate with the institutes to ensure that the quality of standards for UAV technology. Fourth, they could offer centralised database to aggregate all relevant data which could then be leased out for research purposes. Fifth, the data could be used for policy-making. Sixth, the data could be used as a proxy for research in other sectors.

The possibilities are boundless.

#Indonesia is banking on using a hybrid system of solar panels and hydropower floating platforms to achieve their #sustainability and #renewable energy goals #ESG #Asean #SoutheastAsia

Indonesia’s upcoming energy replacement strategy would mainly depend on harnessing hydropower and solar energy thereby reducing and maybe even to the extent of eliminating fossil fuel imports.

Several considerations surfaced during their internal discussions when considering the energy alternatives. The top concerns were the price of implementing the projects plus the land space required for the power plants. Eventually the discussions centered on using solar power and hydropower because these technology are considered to be relatively cheaper and do not require green field for its development.

Instead of building solar farms that require large tracts of land, the country would be focusing on retrofitting existing buildings’ rooftops with solar panels. Due to the dynamics within the country, we could expect the government to spearhead this initiative by installing solar panels on government buildings before encouraging their private sector counterparts to do so.

While these initiatives may appear to be new, Indonesia has already started installing solar panels on rooftops since 2017. This means that they would already have some understanding of the process, including operational data and this could come in handy in their upcoming commitments.

Additionally, they would also be studying how they could develop a hybrid system whereby they could harness energy from both solar power and hydropower. This is done by combining the two technology together so that it would be able to complement each other, supplying the electricity according to the energy generation and consumption trends throughout the day.

Indonesia is expected to emphasise even more on solar power technology, given their previous experience plus they have also committed to building solar panel floating platforms in late 2020. One example is their Cirata power plant which is located approximately 100km southeast from Jakarta. It would be an important part of their Electricity Infrastructure Acceleration programme. This programme would aim to shift 23% of the country’s energy consumption to be sourced from renewable resources by 2025.

A joint venture agreement was signed between UAE-based Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC and PT Pembangkitan Jawa Bali Investasi (PJBI), a subsidiary of Indonesia’s state electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero), to develop the Cirata power plant in December 2020.

Indonesia also announced its consideration for the development of an additional 60 floating photovoltaic power plants on more than 600 lakes and reservoirs in the country.

Why renewable energy may not always be clean? #Renewable #Clean #Environment #Geothermal #Pollution #ESG #Sustainability

Today, I decided to write about renewable energy because I think there’s a little bit of misunderstanding about this term and I want to shed some light on it. As many are already aware of, renewable energy is a buzz word. This term gets thrown across the room a lot of times, and often paired with the message that this energy source will change the energy landscape and clean up our environmental mess.

This isn’t the case.

Renewable energy is a form of energy that mainly harness the kinetic/ heat/ photonic/ potential energy from nature and convert it into electricity. We then channel the generated electricity into homes, offices and industries.

Some of us automatically assume that the process of harvesting renewable energy is a zero-carbon one therefore the output should be much cleaner than those produced by fossil fuel. By zero-carbon process, I mean a process that doesn’t emit any carbon into our atmosphere. We are trying to control the emission of carbon because it is a large part of the total Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emission. Just by referring to the chart below, which I had taken from the EPA’s website, we can see that carbon dioxide forms a “cool” 81% of the GHG emission. To me, that’s a lot.

The measurements were taken from monitoring stations, some have been gathering this data for as long as 50 years (thanks to all the researchers and scientists who devoted their lives to this research!). Between 60 and 100 samples are collected each year and are used to establish baseline greenhouse gas concentrations. Monitoring stations also measure atmospheric gases every few hours as part of its data collection programmes.

Now, as for the emission of carbon dioxide and other GHG. That’s the tricky part. I have issues with the estimates for carbon emission. See, we have estimates that humans emitted more than 35 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) by burning fossil fuels in 2019. Then, we also have estimates that showed humans emitted more than 6.5 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide by burning fossil fuels in 2017.

The issue is, first, the jump in carbon dioxide emission from 2017 to 2019 is huge. That’s like a 5.4 times jump. 540% increase in the total amount of carbon emission. Its not helpful to link these two figures together because most probably, these figures don’t come from the same source. There’s a high chance that the fundaments to calculating the figures is different and that could explain the huge difference. So, this brings me to the second point. Which is, I can’t seem to find the research that backed up these statistics.

There’s a huge debate going on, about how carbon emissions are being measured, how each countries are (or maybe are not) measuring their carbon emission, the methods which they use to measure with, etc. And it is still going on. For easy visualisation, I’ve attached a graph above which I’ve taken from “Our World in Data”. I know it isn’t easy to put together this graph. A lot of hard work went into this. Looks good but we have to understand that this is just an estimate to work with.

Well, an estimate is definitely better than nothing right? Even though it may not be accurate but it does give a sense of the trend. Trends are important to understanding the changes around us. With this knowledge, we could adjust and change in order to adapt.

It also makes sense to control the emission simply because we can control the emission of carbon dioxide. Studies have shown that the GHG retains heat which is precisely why the Earth is warm enough for humans to thrive. The thing is, we don’t want too much of the GHG in our atmosphere because it could contribute to rising global temperature. Rising global temperature has been directly linked to the cause of ice melting in the Arctic and also indirectly linked to the rising sea levels.

Increase in GHG emission = Increase in global temperature = Increase in ice melting in Artic region = increase in rising sea levels = Increase in flooding of large swaths of land and low-lying islands = Drastic change in living conditions

Based on these strings of assumptions, the key to preventing a terrible living condition is to reduce the amount of carbon emission. As such, many are banking on the switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy, hoping that the change could reverse this trend and in time to pass on a comfortable future to our next generation.

The thing is, renewable energy may not be clean too.

It may have its fair share of environmental issues as well. That’s why renewable energy doesn’t always equal to clean energy.

I want to bring up the example of using geothermal energy, which is a form of renewable energy. We have an abundance of geothermal heat underground which could potentially generate energy as long as our inner core allows it. Even though it is technically renewable, the process of harvesting geothermal energy is suspected to be environmentally-unfriendly. Research is still on-going.

Why?

In order to extract geothermal energy, we would have to build huge geothermal plants, often siting it in areas whereby communities have been living nearby for a long time. Somehow, these communities have learnt to harness this form of energy in their own ways. Building these plants often meant relocating the communities, dislodging them from where they believed to be home.

In other cases, it involves drastic changes to the environment, cutting down large swathes of trees, building access roads, siting heavy machineries, increase in human activities, increase in vehicle movements, etc. Research have shown that there is a strong need to engage the community before the undertaking of such project.

A strong ESG mandate is required as part of the engagement process, otherwise the project wouldn’t be successful without the support of the local community (Majer, Baria, Stark, Oates, Bommer, Smith, Asanuma, 2007).

Photo by ROMAN ODINTSOV on Pexels.com

Apart from the different forms of environmental destructions, (this one is scary) studies have shown that the process of harvesting geothermal energy actually increases seismic activities in the region of the geothermal plants.

In one study at The Geysers geothermal reservoir that is located in the northern California, evidence strongly suggests that activities associated with production of electric power cause an increase in the number of small earthquakes. Injection of water into the well in the center of the study area caused an increase in the number of earthquakes per day (Johnson, 2014).

Research on the linkages between the extraction of geothermal energy and earthquakes are still on-going. Also, engineers are still working on improving an enhanced geothermal system (EGS, not ESG) that could mitigate seismic risk. Even while all these are going on, some have chipped in saying that a few earthquakes are nothing if they could reduce global warming. Its an on-goingdebate and studies are inconclusive.

So you see, renewable energy is not an end-all, be-all solution to our environmental problems. Next time someone uses the term renewable energy on you like its the Holy Grail. Please remember about what I have wrote and encourage your associates to rethink about renewable energy, dig deeper and have a healthy discussion about it.

If you cannot remember anything after reading. Just remember that renewable energy may not always be clean energy.

#Indonesia is expected to further collaborate with #Hungary to continue to receive their water treatment expertise #Water #Renewable #ESG #Sustainability #Data #AI #SouthEastAsia

As part of Hungary’s earlier efforts to help their small and medium enterprises that are specialising in waterworks, the Budapest Waterworks submitted and won a tender from Indonesia to provide water for 35 Indonesian communities. This was part of the Hungary government’s plan to provide opportunities for the Hungarian companies to be involved in international projects. Moving forward to 2021, Hungary will once again extend its water treatment expertise to Indonesia.

Hungary is a landlocked country located in the central Danube Basin. It is divided into The Great Plains, the Transdanube and the Northern Hills areas. Hungary is a fairly small country but is known for great biodiversity. This biodiversity is threatened by some of Hungary’s most serious problems: air and water pollution. Pollution disrupts the water quality in Hungary, especially the Danube River, quite significantly. These pollutants come from industrial and large-scale agriculture.

Still, the country is relentless in solving the issue of drinking water scarcity. Even though they acknowledged that agriculture is one of the major source of pollution of both surface and groundwater, an emerging threat to the water supply comes from drug residues. Aside from this, the country also learnt that conventional wastewater treatments are not effective at removing these pollution.

Supported by its private sector, the country has developed methods aimed at removing pollutants from agricultural sources from their drinking water. Turned out that their experience in this type of water treatment has served them well in international business development.

While discussing potential water treatment projects with Indonesia, the country has also been very aggressive in expanding their reach elsewhere and had managed to clinch a water treatment deal with Ghana as well.

Apart from having specialised experiences in water treatment, Hungary is already familiar with Indonesia’s working culture. This places them in good stead to secure more projects in Indonesia in the future.

In addition, the Hungarian government reportedly will be offering project financing and other banking facilities, which might be provided by the Hungarian Exim Bank and the Hungarian Commercial Bank. The provision of expertise, manpower, financing and local working experience will certainly put the Hungarians in a good light, making the deal difficult to reject.

From my perspective, these types of infrastructure projects could potentially open up a lot of opportunities in other sectors as well and we could expect the Indonesia-Hungary collaboration to strengthen further in the future, if everything goes right.

Previously, the Hungarians have already spearheaded their market entry into the Indonesia with a total of 36 water treatment plants on Sumatra, Java, Celebes and Flores islands. We could expect the Hungarian government, as part of their next contract agreement negotiation, to try to negotiate for more Hungarians to be involved in the upcoming water treatment projects in Indonesia. That being so, I think that it would be critical to include a strong ESG mandate within the future commercial vehicle so that it fosters a collaborative and inclusive working culture for all parties.

In my opinion, this move would provide more access and opportunities for Hungarians to understand and learn more about the Indonesians’ working culture which might pan out well in the future.

Why?

Based on my past observations of large civil engineering projects, there were some foreigners provided their engineering expertise in Southeast Asia and ended up marrying some of the locals. Now, some of them even abandoned their engineering work and set up businesses that involve some linkage between their country of origin and Southeast Asia. Their businesses AND children now serves as important connections between their country of origins and Southeast Asia.

This is why we should sometimes open up our perspectives and explore the possibilities. Don’t merely judge a situation simply based on near, short, mid-term mindset but learn to create bridges, create possibilities, create collaborations, create multiple positive futures. Always be creating links. Always be creating.

That’s the key to growth in Indonesia, or maybe anywhere else in the world too.

Germany would be supporting Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia in their transition journeys to using clean, affordable and secure energy #Environment #DataAnalytics #CleanEnergy #Renewable #Philippines #Thailand #Vietnam #Thailand #SouthEastAsia

Germany has agreed to support Indonesia in their journey to reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission, ensuring sustainable development and also reducing reliance on fossil fuel. In this, Germany would be facilitating a series of capacity development programme for the Southeast Asian countries comprising Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. The capacity programme is designed specially to help these countries and would last until Feb 2024.

The capacity building programme would help Indonesia to improve their ability to harness data analytics thereby shaping data-drive and evidence-based policies that could steer the country towards clean and renewable energy. With this transformation, Indonesia hopes to be able to fulfil their commitment to the Paris Agreement i.e. to reduce GHG emission by 29% by 2030.

As of now, Indonesia has noted that the technological development of solar and wind energy is promising and is studying the feasibility of banking on these energy alternatives to replace their existing coal and gas power plants. While it seems feasible on paper, the transition could be a challenge because their private sector is very invested in the extraction of natural resources in meeting energy demands. As such, the government must be able to rally and encourage their private sector to come on-board the transformation journey.

I think we could expect to see the government to come to rely on a third party to negotiate a possible mid-point between the public and private sector. Otherwise, another development would be a PPP vehicle that is designed to spark clean and renewable energy investments thereby creating possible incremental steps for the private sector to leap into the next phase.

The reason why #Laos is being called the “Battery of Southeast Asia” #Environment #Water #Rivers #RenewableEnergy #CleanEnergy #SouthEastAsia #Thailand #Cambodia

Laos is a country that is situated right in the middle of China, Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam, with the Mekong River flowing right through it. The Mekong River is a very long river, spanning almost 2,700 miles, which is equivalent to the distance between Boston and Arizona. It would take approximately 40 days of continuous driving at a good pace in order to cover that distance.

Because of the river flow, the country is able to harness the kinetic energy of the flowing river and transform it into electricity. This enables the country to generate a lot of energy and then sell the excess to its neighbours. Laos has already been doing it for many years. The current cross-border agreements has Laos supplying up to 7,000 MW of energy to Thailand. Aside from Thailand, It is also supplying 5,000 MW of energy to Vietnam and 200 MW to Cambodia.

The current studies estimated that the hydropower potential of Laos, is roughly about 26 GW, which is equivalent to the power generated by almost 81 million solar panels. The largest solar farm in the world generates only about 2,000 MW. In this case, Laos’ hydropower potential means that the country could generate energy that is 12 times more than the energy that is generated by the largest solar farm.

This is why Laos is being called the “Battery of Southeast Asia”.

Charging full steam into building more dams in order to meet energy demands seems to be a natural and easy choice, but research has shown that dam building actually disrupts the communities living along the river. It forces those people to relocate and also threatens to harm the local fishing stocks.

This is some food for thought. Sometimes we have to pay attention to the instruments that we use to harness renewable energy. It could be be harmful to our environment. Even though renewable energy is supposedly the better and cleaner energy as compared to fossil fuel, sometimes, maybe we should take a step back and do a holistic cost-benefit-analysis before plunging ahead.
