The Indonesia government announced that they are thinking of transforming and transiting to being a data-driven organisation through the holistic adoption of data science, data analysis and data governance tools. The decision to adopt advanced analytic tools, is in line with their vision to continue to be relevant in a technology-driven age.
With a digital platform underpinning the administration, they are expected to glean deeper insights, connect the dots and to produce relevant policies that could further improve their economy.
If the Indonesia government remains committed to this move, they could potentially value-add to their economy by leveraging the private sector’s ability to deliver the platform. If augmented with a well thought out policy, a system like this could easily span several industries and create employment opportunities for the young graduates in Indonesia.

The only disadvantage to this approach is the project duration because the administration would need to carefully plan their requirements, set out a realistic implementation plan with risk mitigation strategies, communicate and collaborate with the private sector and institutes of higher learning.
If executed properly, they could create employment opportunities throughout the entire project implementation, benefit from the insights and experiences and create greater business and employment opportunities. This is a challenging task which requires a lot of hard work and focus, and best supported by a committed taskforce to spearhead the initiative.
Pulling off a system like this, will require substantial investments in data centres so that the administration could safely store their confidential information away. Apart from the actual construction of the data centres, they would be expected to engage the entire value-chain of engineers who are trained in mechanical, electrical, cooling and environmental technology.

A small data centre would be about the size of a basketball court and a big data centre easily spans across the entire perimeter of a soccer field. Given the large population in Indonesia, it is expected that the government would be required to build a fairly large data centre.
Maybe several. Why? Because data keeps growing and eventually they’ll need to have a strategy for handling old data. You can’t just delete everything away, right? That’s not the professional way to handle old data.
Additionally, there’s also the need to provide training academies for nurturing data scientists, cyber-security experts and the provision for annual certifications to keep the data scientists committed to continuous upgrading and improvement.

Due to the advancements in technology, companies are exploring data centres as an alternative to energy storage as well. As such, there is potential to unlock more synergies by combining their digitalisation journey with their energy transition plans. This would signal well to potential investors about the administration’s whole-of-government thinking and ability to create synergies.
Or, they could simply outsource the entire implementation to companies like Amazon that might be able to provide a plug-and-play system. Just add one more item to the yearly budget, raise money through SBSN and pay companies like Amazon to do the hard work.
The latter option would certainly make lives easier.
